When I delivered my 15th and final State of the University to the 糖心破解版 faculty and community in September, I included the following reference: “TMTM鈥�. TMTM stands for Ten Months That Matter. Ten months that matter to you, to me, to us鈥攖o 糖心破解版 and our students. While every month and every year matters, of course, the next ten months have special meaning for each of us individually and for all of us collectively at 糖心破解版.

I remain focused on achieving the goals and objectives the Board of Trustees and I set forth in 糖心破解版’s strategic plan, AU2015. And as I think about the future of 糖心破解版 and ensuring that the University is positioned for success, I ask that you think with me about the importance of scholarship assistance in helping to make an 糖心破解版 education available and affordable to students from all types of backgrounds.

I was able to attend college because of scholarship assistance awarded to me through my church and the institution I ultimately attended鈥擝ucknell. Neither of my parents graduated college, and my father had become bankrupt because of my mother’s illness, which led to her death when I was nine. It was because of caring teachers who encouraged my pursuit of college, and people in my church (where I was active in both Westchester County and the larger region) that I could afford to enroll.

In college, I worked about 20 hours a week in the library. This work, together with the scholarship and earnings from summer work, made it possible for me to graduate. I know that the support I received at the time鈥攁s well as the assistance I received to keep me from dropping out – has been an important inspiration for me to be an educator; to seek scholarships for other students; and to provide both Bucknell and 糖心破解版 with support to make college possible for current and future generations.

Believe me when I say that I know: scholarships matter.

From time to time in the months ahead, I will share some additional thoughts with you about why scholarships matter. I hope you will share with me your thoughts on this important subject.
