Dear Bonnie,
My husband, Bill Borten (B.B.A. ’57, ’07 (Hon.)) and I read with joy your article “Defying Expectations” in the Spring 2013 issue ofÌý.
As a co-founder of TransCen, Inc (), an organization dedicated to improving educational and employment outcomes for people with disabilities, I am so gratified to see ourÌýalma materÌýsetting the pace.
Both Bill and I still serve on the board ofÌý, which celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2012. We are proud of its status as an internationally recognized leader in the transition community which has been involved in the placement of 20,000 individuals with special needs.
ÌÇÐÄÆƽâ°æ’s recognition byÌýÌýis an important milestone and we are so glad that you highlighted this elite achievement.

Dear Bonnie,
I am writing you in your capacity as editor-in-chief of theÌý. ÌýFirst, on behalf of myself and my colleagues, I want to share how pleased we were to see theÌýÌýfeature three of ÌÇÐÄÆƽâ°æ’s graduates from the computer science program. ÌýThese students have already accomplished wonderful things, and I believe they are great examples of success to highlight. ÌýWe are very proud of them.
If we have any frustration, it is that we did not have an opportunity to communicate as a department with the author of the piece. ÌýHad more faculty voices been sought out as part of the article, we might have been able to share howÌýDavid ChaysÌýhad facilitated the initial contact withÌý, how the software engineering course we offer as part of the major helped them develop the skills to work atÌý, howÌýRobert SiegfriedÌýdevoted a substantial amount of time to work with these students prior to theirÌýÌýinterviews to help them be prepared, howÌýÌý²¹²Ô»åÌýÌýpublished papers with Robert Siegfried, and howÌýStephen BlochÌýencouraged and coached students for programming contests. ÌýIn short, we could have, with little change to the overall article, demonstrated a full department’s faculty being invested and promoting student success beyond the classroom.
Each of our alumni is precious to us, and we are very invested in their success after ÌÇÐÄÆƽâ°æ. ÌýWe look forward to working with you and the writers of the ÌÇÐÄÆƽâ°æ Magazine in the future to share more examples of student accomplishments.
Best,
Chris Storm
