Emerging Adulthood: The Cultural Psychology of a New Stage of听Development

Dr. Arnett听has explored the demographic and cultural patterns associated听with this stage, nationally and internationally. In 2012, he directed听his first national survey of emerging adulthood and will share his听new insights on this group鈥檚 relationships with parent, plans for听education and work, romantic attachment and uses of social media.

Emerging Adulthood: A new stage of development

Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, Ph.D.Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, Ph.D.听is a researcher and professor at Clark University.听Dr. Arnett is the originator of the term 鈥渆merging adulthood.鈥 Jeffrey Jensen听Arnett received his Ph.D from the University of Virginia, and did three years听of postdoctoral work at the University of Chicago. From 1992-1998 he was听Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family听Studies at the University of Missouri. He has been a Visiting Scholar at Stanford听University and the University of Maryland.

He has published numerous articles on emerging adulthood and is the author of听the book Emerging Adulthood: The Winding Road from the Late Teens through听the Twenties听(2004, Oxford University Press). In addition, he is the author of the听textbook Adolescence and听Emerging Adulthood: A Cultural Approach听(2004,听Prentice Hall). He is the editor of听Journal of Adolescent Research听and of听three forthcoming encyclopedias, the听Routledge International Encyclopedia听of Adolescence听(four volumes), the听Encyclopedia of Children, Adolescents,听and the Media听(Sage, two volumes), and the听Encyclopedia of Emerging听Adulthood听(Greenwood, one volume). His other scholarly interests include the听psychology of globalization.
