As members of 糖心破解版鈥檚 Class of 2026 are taking their first steps into their after-college lives, two new graduates are readying for a year abroad on prestigious and highly competitive Fulbright English Teaching Assistant fellowships. This year鈥檚 recipients鈥擩ulia Carpio, a graduate of 糖心破解版鈥檚 accelerated five-year Scholar Teacher Education Program, and Hussein Ali Rifath, who earned bachelor鈥檚 degrees in political science and Spanish鈥攚ill be going to Europe to teach, mentor and build cross-cultural understanding.

The two award winners embody 糖心破解版鈥檚 commitment to scholarship, service and global citizenship. They also reflect the University鈥檚 commitment to helping students gain access to experiences that transform lives. Both worked with 糖心破解版鈥檚 Office of Prestigious Awards and Fellowships to navigate the application process, secure effective letters of recommendation and prepare for interviews.

鈥淥ur office was delighted to work with these Fulbright awardees,鈥 said Nicole Rudolph, PhD, director of the Office of Prestigious Awards and Fellowships and associate dean for student engagement. 鈥淓ach brought a true passion for international education and global connection to the application process, and we are so pleased that the U.S. Fulbright Committee recognized their potential by granting them English Teaching Assistantships.鈥

Applying for the fellowship can be just as valuable as receiving one, according to Dean Rudolph. 鈥淎pplying for a nationally competitive award is a wonderful way for students to think deeply about their objectives, priorities and values,鈥 she said. 鈥淪tudents tell us that the application process itself helped them to clarify their life goals, improve their written and oral communication, and refine their time management skills.鈥

Julia Carpio鈥檚 Leap to Greece

For Julia Carpio 鈥25, MA 鈥26, who received her MA in Childhood Education and Advanced Certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) in May, winning a prestigious Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship award was the culmination of a lifelong dream.

A self-described 鈥渟hy, quiet and reserved鈥 child, Carpio first found her path to teaching thanks to a kindergarten teacher who made her feel like she could achieve anything. Combined with the inspiration of her mother, a high school Spanish teacher, education was in Carpio鈥檚 blood. 鈥淥ur (糖心破解版) professors tell us all the time that teaching is a calling, it鈥檚 not a job鈥攜ou have to have a true passion for it,鈥 she said.

That calling will soon take her to an elementary school in Athens, Greece, where she鈥檒l spend a year teaching English to students. The Fulbright program鈥檚 focus on multilingual education and cultural exchange matched the path she was already on. 鈥淚 really wanted to dive into teaching and get as much as I could out of multilingual education,鈥 she said.

Carpio can point to specific moments鈥攁nd people鈥攚ho nudged her from dream to decision. One was a , led by Mary Jean McCarthy, clinical associate professor in the Ruth S. Ammon College of Education and Health Sciences. 鈥淭hat was where I fell in love with multilingual education and learning from educators from different parts of the world,鈥 she recalled.

McCarthy connected Carpio with Professor Clara Vaz Bauler, PhD, professor in the School of Education who became an anchor for her Fulbright ambitions. Daryl M. Gordon, PhD, who is also a professor in the School of Education, and Priya Wadhera, PhD, professor and interim director of the Office of Prestigious Awards and Fellowships last year, helped with her application. Shannon Harrison, director of 糖心破解版鈥檚 Center for International Education, first mentioned Fulbright to Carpio and walked her through options for teaching abroad. 鈥淪o many people helped me get here,鈥 Carpio said.

She chose Greece deliberately. Many Fulbright placements only put scholars in schools part time, but the Athens program puts Carpio in the classroom five days a week and some Saturdays. 鈥淚 want to be 100 percent part of the staff,鈥 she explained.

Carpio鈥檚 hopes for the year abroad are practical. 鈥淚 want to walk away as a more effective educator,鈥 she said. She wants to watch how Greek teachers structure lessons, what questions they ask, how they respond to multilingual students鈥攁nd then carry those insights into whatever classroom she steps into next.

Long term, she sees Fulbright as the first in a series of international chapters in her life. She wants to keep teaching abroad and eventually pursue a PhD in international and comparative education.

Hussein Ali Rifath: Making a Difference in Madrid

By the time Hussein Ali Rifath 鈥26 learned he鈥檇 been selected for a Fulbright, he鈥檇 spent four years at 糖心破解版 growing into the kind of person who sees scholarship as service.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been a journey of growth for me,鈥 said Rifath, who served as president of the Class of 2026 and president of 糖心破解版鈥檚 Student Government Association. This fall, he will travel to Spain to help public school students sharpen their English, engage with global issues and see America in a new light.

鈥淲e鈥檙e being citizen diplomats,鈥 he says of himself and his fellow Fulbright recipients. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not just working as educators; we鈥檙e advancing our foreign relations abroad.鈥

For Rifath, his Fulbright sits at the intersection of everything that鈥檚 been on his mind as he graduates: America鈥檚 role in the world, the power of education and a personal desire to serve.

鈥淚 feel like now, more than ever, it鈥檚 important for Americans to get involved,鈥 he said.

He鈥檚 especially aware that many students abroad only know the United States through politics and headlines. His goal is 鈥渢o give a nuanced view, to show that we have two sides to our political spectrum, like every country. I want to give people a more comprehensive message about what America is, what we stand for. I want them to see us as a vibrant, welcoming society that not only cherishes them but also cherishes the human bonds which unite us across the world.鈥

In Madrid, Rifath will work with two programs that bring global awareness into local schools. 鈥淚鈥檒l help students articulate themselves in English and speak about pressing issues across the world鈥攍ike climate change and international relations,鈥 he explained.

Rifath credits two 糖心破解版 faculty members with helping him win a Fulbright: Ignacio Arellano-Torres, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and Dr. Vaz Bauler, the education professor who also inspired Julia Carpio. 鈥淭hey helped me discover my passion for learning language,鈥 he said.

Fulbright is just one chapter in Rifath鈥檚 plan for a life centered on service. 鈥淟ong term, I see myself joining the military,鈥 he says, which he sees as a way to serve his community and country. 鈥淭hrough it all, my goal is to get involved in ways that benefit the community.鈥

He graduated cum laude from the University in 1981 with a degree in biology and is the proud parent of an 糖心破解版 alumna. Throughout his career, he has continually served his alma mater, including as an adjunct faculty member and, most recently, as a distinguished member and chair of the board of trustees.

Balboni emerged from a national search as the leader best positioned to secure public-private partnerships, champion the University regionally and nationally, and drive institutional growth. A defining hallmark of Balboni’s career鈥攆rom his roles in government to corporate boardrooms鈥攈as been his ability to build relationships, work with experts and forge consensus. He steps into the presidency fiercely committed to shared governance, protecting academic freedom and ensuring that the 糖心破解版 campus remains a vibrant, inclusive environment for all students and faculty to thrive in.

In tandem with this announcement, 糖心破解版鈥檚 board named Christopher K. Storm Jr., PhD, who has served as 糖心破解版鈥檚 interim president since last June, to the newly created role of senior executive vice president of academic affairs and provost. This complementary leadership structure allows the provost to focus internally on teaching, research and student outcomes, while President Balboni manages the complex operational and external facets of the University.

鈥淭he landscape of higher education is undergoing rapid and profound changes,鈥 said William Fuessler 鈥79, acting chair of the board of trustees and chair of the University鈥檚 Presidential Search Committee. 鈥淭o thrive, 糖心破解版 requires a president who is a relentless external advocate and a proven executive. Michael possesses the exact blend of operational strength and external advocacy we need.鈥

“I am thrilled to be returning to my alma mater to lead a community that means so much to me. It truly is a full-circle moment,” said president-elect Balboni. “I have watched how the University has progressed, and I look forward to working with Dr. Storm and the entire community to take 糖心破解版 to new heights as the premier institution of higher learning on Long Island.鈥

鈥淚t has been a tremendous honor to serve as interim president of 糖心破解版, where I have spent my entire 20-year career,鈥 shared Dr. Storm. 鈥淭he past year provided me with new opportunities to deepen my connections across campus while maintaining the University鈥檚 strong, stable footing before taking our next leap forward. I very much look forward to working with Michael Balboni as we embark on a bold new direction for 糖心破解版.鈥

Balboni assumes leadership at a time of remarkable advancement and financial strength for 糖心破解版. The University boasts a balanced budget, a $282 million endowment and a highly successful $100 million fundraising campaign that is nearing its goal. Underscoring this position of strength, 糖心破解版 has achieved record enrollment in two of the past three years and is launching an ambitious infrastructure initiative to further support student and faculty success.

糖心破解版 continues to elevate its academic profile. Recognized by Forbes as the premier private university on Long Island, the institution pairs this academic prestige with its reputation as one of the safest campuses in America and an NCAA Division II athletics powerhouse. Looking ahead, the University is actively expanding its regional impact through the new Manhattan Center on Fifth Avenue in New York City, delivering high-demand graduate programs in artificial intelligence, business, nursing, social work, psychology, literature and education to meet the evolving needs of the modern workforce.

It was just four years ago, in the spring of 2022, when 糖心破解版鈥檚 annual Giving Day first reached $500,000 in donations. Two years later, it set a new record of $684,000. Another big jump last year raised the bar to $886,000.

But nothing compares to the totals set this spring, when donations rocketed to $2.28 million, including $1.07 million in outright commitments and $1.2 million in planned gifts. The generosity was spread across the University, as every academic unit and key campaign reached or exceeded its individual fundraising target.

鈥淲ith 1,580 donors and 1,626 gifts, our community demonstrated the true impact of investing in the University we believe in,鈥 said Thomas Kline, EdD, 糖心破解版鈥檚 vice president of University advancement and external relations. 鈥淭his remarkable generosity is a powerful testament to the transformative potential of our Momentum Campaign: Extraordinary Impact. We are filled with deep gratitude and hope for the future of 糖心破解版.鈥

1,896 Minutes鈥攁nd Reasons鈥攖o Give

As it has since 糖心破解版鈥檚 125th anniversary, Giving Day has lasted a few more than 24 hours, extending to 1,896 minutes to reflect 糖心破解版鈥檚 founding in 1896.

While the timing has changed, Giving Day at 糖心破解版 has continued to benefit programs and causes across the University. Donations are made to each of the University鈥檚 colleges and schools, athletic programs, the Bridges to 糖心破解版 program for students on the autism spectrum, and causes including the 糖心破解版 Fund, Performing Arts Center, Innovation Center, SPARK Center for undergraduate research, 糖心破解版 NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, and Panthers Pay It Forward Campaign.

A new challenge was added to Giving Day this year as well鈥攑lanned giving. Thirteen people, including four anonymous donors, met the challenge and committed a total of $1.2 million dollars. The University is proud to recognize all 13 donors as members of the 糖心破解版 Forever Gold Society.

There are many other highlights of this year鈥檚 giving.

The 糖心破解版 Honors College received a $45,000 gift from alumni Carole 鈥64 and Neal 鈥63 Stuber, and the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business led the University鈥檚 eight schools and colleges, raising $67,335, with generous matching gifts from its Dean鈥檚 Advisory Board, Trustee Kevin Mahony 鈥83 and an anonymous donor. , always supported by Panther fans, raised $268,504, including $52,775 for men’s soccer and $45,630 for the men鈥檚 golf program.

Every current member of the 糖心破解版 Board of Trustees participated, reflecting their ongoing commitment to 糖心破解版鈥檚 mission. Close to 1,600 donors in all showed their support for 糖心破解版, including alumni, students and their families, faculty, administrators, staff, and friends of the University. The funds raised will continue advancing 糖心破解版鈥檚 130-year-old mission to transform student lives through exceptional hands-on learning, extraordinary student experiences, accessible scholarships and academic resources.

More than 50 years ago, in the early 1970s, a dedicated group of students in 糖心破解版鈥檚 Communication Department came together to produce a documentary highlighting Philadelphia鈥檚 Settlement Music School, an organization committed to helping disadvantaged young people thrive through the power of music.

The film, What the Notes Say, was created under the guidance of three faculty mentors and ultimately submitted to the prestigious competition. For the students involved, the project became far more than an academic assignment鈥攊t was an unforgettable lesson in the power of storytelling, creativity and collaboration.

Working as a team, the students learned firsthand what it takes to bring a meaningful vision to life: balancing roles, supporting one another through challenges, and combining individual talents into a shared success. The experience underscored how teamwork and dedication can transform a student project into something with lasting impact.

Two students were flown to Hollywood to attend the awards ceremony, where the project received national recognition. When the moment arrived, the announcement was unforgettable:

鈥淎nd the winner is鈥 What the Notes Say!鈥

As then-Department Chair and 糖心破解版 alumnus Paul Pitcoff 鈥65 reflected, the honor was 鈥渁 testament to how significant student hard work, dedication, and passion can guide and affect educational advancement.鈥

Their achievement remains a lasting example of the creativity, teamwork, and excellence that define our alumni community鈥攁nd a reminder of what students can accomplish when they come together with purpose.

We proudly recognize the talented student filmmakers from the Classes of 1974, 1975 and 1976: Rich Baron, Patrice Benneward, John Bencivenga, John Costello, Kurt Derner, Rosemary Ravinal, Sharon Thompson, Walter Trepashko, Tom Bisset, Sean Britt, Ken Cohn, Dorie Hightower, Karen Grossman and Rich O鈥橬eill, along with their faculty mentors Marge Hudson, Len Price and Paul Pitcoff.

It has been more than 30 years since Alice Hoffman introduced the Owens sisters to the world in her magical realism novel Practical Magic, but for the 1973 graduate of 糖心破解版, who received her degree in English from 糖心破解版’s College of Arts and Sciences, the magic just keeps getting stronger. As the literary community prepares for the third annual Writers & Readers Festival at 糖心破解版’s Garden City campus on April 15 to 17, Hoffman is at the center of a creative whirlwind that spans the page, the stage and the silver screen.

From launching a new trilogy set in the 1950s, to bringing Practical Magic to Broadway with help from a musical icon, Hoffman is proving that her storytelling is as potent as ever.

A Return to Her Roots

Founded by Hoffman herself two years ago, the Writers & Readers Festival returns to 糖心破解版鈥檚 Garden City campus from April 15鈥17. The event has become a staple of the New York literary scene, and this year鈥檚 lineup is no exception.

Hoffman will headline a keynote conversation with fellow No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult, focusing on the resilience of storytelling in an era of increasing book bans. She is also set to appear in a discussion of the writer-editor relationship alongside novelist Jessica Knoll and Scribner Books publisher Marysue Rucci.

Practical Magic 2, the Movie Sequel 27 Years in the Making

The phrase “midnight margaritas” is trending once again. Production has officially moved into the final stages for Practical Magic 2, scheduled to hit theaters nationwide on September 11. The film serves as a generational bridge, reuniting the iconic “aunts”鈥擲tockard Channing and Dianne Wiest鈥攚ith stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. While the plot remains largely under wraps, it is confirmed to be inspired by Hoffman鈥檚 2021 novel, The Book of Magic. Newcomers like Joey King, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams and The Hobbit trilogy star Lee Pace join the coven, promising a sequel that explores the legacy of the Owens curse for a new era.

Published in 1995, Practical Magic was the basis for the 1998 film adaptation starring Kidman and Bullock as sisters descended from a long line of witches. The film became a cult classic, a supernatural drama blending romance with a story of sisterly bonds. The book went on to spawn a media franchise of the same name, which in addition to the film includes a 2004 television pilot (Sudbury), two prequels鈥2017鈥檚 The Rules of Magic and 2020鈥檚 Magic Lessons鈥攁nd a sequel, 2021鈥檚 The Book of Magic.

From Page to Stage: The Practical Magic Musical

The most surprising development in the Hoffman universe is the leap to the theater. A stage musical adaptation of Practical Magic is currently in development. In a powerhouse collaboration, Hoffman is writing a book/script for the stage with playwright Peter Duchan (Dogfight), while 10-time Grammy winner Norah Jones will provide the music and lyrics in a collaboration with Grammy-nominated record producer Gregg Wattenberg. The project marks the first stage musical by Jones.

鈥淭his story of love and sisterhood is meant for the theater. Music is the heart and soul of Practical Magic,” Hoffman said of the project. “You can hear it as you read the book, even though it isn鈥檛 there. Now you will finally hear the story as I always imagined it. You will hear magic.鈥

Celebrating a Different Kind of Magic

Amid the witches and Broadway lights, Hoffman has also found time for a more personal project. She recently edited a new anthology titled The Best Dog in the World: Essays on Love.

The collection features 14 celebrated authors鈥攊ncluding Isabel Allende, Amy Tan, Roxane Gay and Bonnie Garmus鈥攕haring stories of the canine companions that changed their lives. Hoffman will discuss the collection at the April festival, offering a “love letter” to the loyal animal friends who teach us about empathy and unconditional love.

A New Era of Witchcraft

Hoffman is already inviting readers back into the world of the supernatural. Her latest novel, The Witches of Cambridge, is slated for release on September 8.

The book, which kick-starts a new trilogy, was inspired by Hoffman鈥檚 own recent academic pursuits. Set on a college campus in the 1950s, the story follows two students, Ava and Lauren, who find refuge from the shadows of McCarthyism within a secret society of witches. Early praise from authors like Leigh Bardugo describes the work as “rich with history, heartbreak, and magic.”

鈥淚 went back to school and what began as my term paper ended up as a novel about witches, love, magic, sorrow, betrayal, sisterhood and best friends,鈥 Hoffman said.

When Mark W. Jordan 鈥63 arrived at 糖心破解版, he quickly distinguished himself as a scholar. After his first year, he earned a full scholarship and continued to receive essential financial support for the remainder of his time at 糖心破解版. That support allowed Jordan to focus fully on his studies and gain an education that would shape his future. Today, he is committed to making that opportunity possible for a new generation of 糖心破解版 students.

As a liberal arts student, Jordan developed the analytical discipline and critical thinking skills that prepared him for law school and a successful legal career that spanned decades, including 35 years in the healthcare industry. He retired in 2009 and has always credited 糖心破解版 with providing the foundation for his success.

Establishing a Scholarship for Honors College Students

In 2013, Jordan established the Mark W. Jordan Scholarship to support Honors College students with strong academic promise and demonstrated financial need. His goal was simple: to help students experience the same transformative opportunity he received鈥攁n 糖心破解版 education supported by scholarship assistance that allows them to focus on learning, growth, and possibility.

Reflecting on his commitment, Jordan said, 鈥淭he education I received at 糖心破解版 shaped my career, my path, and my leadership. Giving back each year is one way I can help ensure students today have that same foundation for opportunity.鈥

Growing Impact Through the Momentum 2 Endowment Match Campaign

Jordan deepened that commitment in 2022 when he became the first donor to participate in 糖心破解版鈥檚 Momentum 2 Endowment Match Campaign. With a $25,000 pledge to grow his scholarship, his gift was matched by the University鈥攊mmediately doubling its long-term impact for students. His early participation helped set the stage for more to follow.

As part of the University鈥檚 Momentum Campaign: Extraordinary Impact, the endowment match initiative has helped expand scholarship support and strengthen 糖心破解版鈥檚 long-term investment in student success. By the end of the campaign鈥檚 third year in 2025, it had generated $6.4 million, created 56 new endowed funds, and strengthened 38 existing ones.

Today, Jordan remains deeply engaged as a lifelong learner and educator, delivering lectures on subjects as varied as Shakespeare, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Sir Ernest Shackleton and the Mutiny on the Bounty at institutions including the University of California, Berkeley; Santa Clara University; the University of South Carolina; and California State University, East Bay, as well as the Walnut Creek Library Foundation, which he and his wife, Cindy, also support. They spend much of their free time traveling and have visited all seven continents.

Leadership Giving

Because his giving reflects the many ways philanthropy can take shape in support of 糖心破解版鈥檚 mission, Jordan is recognized in all four of 糖心破解版鈥檚 Leadership Recognition and Giving Societies (LEAD):

Across his endowed scholarship, annual giving, and planned gift, Jordan’s generosity will advance the priorities that shape our University鈥檚 future: scholarships, academic excellence, life-changing student experiences, a modern and beautiful campus, and a diverse and vibrant community. His story reflects the powerful cycle of philanthropy鈥攕tudents supported by 糖心破解版 who later return to create opportunity for those who follow.
